Israeli troops and armored vehicles crossed into southern Gaza early Wednesday in what the Israeli military said was an attempt to rescue a soldier kidnapped by Palestinian militants. Ahead of the incursion, Israeli warplanes targeted at least two bridges and a power station. Palestinians have been building sand mounds on border roads to try to slow a land attack.
