The good-looks contest is over for home printing–pretty much any inkjet can spit out photos that rival what the local drugstore can produce. So what to sell next? Speed. At least that's the approach of Hewlett-Packard, which is launching a new line of printers aimed at impatient consumers and office workers.
Mon, 26 Sep 2005 16:00:00 EST Red Smith: a Ruthian writer
Had he lived, Red Smith would have turned 100 yesterday. The New York Times, his last employer, ran one of his old columns, an elegant bit of prose written the day after Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth's home run record. By Red's standards, it was a minor effort, but I wonder how many readers said to themselves, this is the best sports column to appear in the Times since, well, Red Smith died. Besides heart, imagination, and masterly prose, Red brought a sly wit to the table. Analyzing a Notre Dame season (7 wins, 2 losses, and a tie), he explained to readers that the Irish had overwhelmed seven opponents, underwhelmed two, and whelmed one.
Mon, 26 Sep 2005 16:00:00 EST The energy storm's not over yet
Although Hurricane Rita delivered far less devastation and loss of life than Katrina, it has left behind great uncertainty over its impact on oil and natural gas supplies. In an unusual Sunday trading session designed to calm the markets after Hurricane Rita, the price of crude oil futures fell sharply in response to the government's hopeful outlook on how the energy industry has weathered the storm. Still, Katrina forced a virtual shutdown of the nation's most important energy center, and most industry sources said damage was still being assessed.

President Bush wants to make it easier for the Pentagon to deploy military troops during domestic disasters such as Hurrican Katrina. But a critic of that idea says Bush risks undermining "a fundamental principle of American law" by tinkering with the Posse Comitatus Act.
Mon, 26 Sep 2005 20:01:19 EDT Wet misery in Louisiana
Louisiana is reeling from its second hurricane strike in a month, with newly flooded and re-flooded communities bailing out from Hurricane Rita. Aerial photographs show the storm reduced rows of homes along the Cameron Parish shoreline to nothing but splintered remains and empty foundations. The flooded countryside is dotted with carcasses of as many as 5,000 cattle.
