Every four years, the Pentagon produces a document called the Quadrennial Defense Review. Excerpts of the draft document, which is to be released on February 6, have been leaked to the press. One of the most important changes in the U.S. military's structure that it proposes is the largest increase in Special Operations Forces since the Vietnam War.

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 12:00:00 EST A slew of gay, conservative writers
Andrew Sullivan mentions three of my favorite gay writers today–Jonathan Rauch, Norah Vincent, and Walter Olson. Rauch is the exceptionally good libertarian columnist at National Journal. Vincent has been a strong conservative voice for years, long before she made it big with her current book, Male Like Me. Walter Olson, associated with the Manhattan Institute, runs the wonderful antilitigiousness Web site, Overlawyered.com. Many other gays I admire were not mentioned—for example, Tammy Bruce, author of The Death of Right and Wrong: Exposing the Left's Assault on Our Culture and Values.

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 21:56:37 EST Kerry move sets up Alito showdown
Sen. John Kerry will attempt a filibuster to stop Judge Samuel Alito becoming a Supreme Court justice. "Judge Alito's confirmation would be an ideological coup on the Supreme Court," Kerry said, but some senior Democrats are worried the move could backfire. The filibuster effectively extends debate to block a vote, but Republicans believe they will have enough votes to prevent a filibuster.

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 21:23:34 EST Hamas' past casts cloud over peace plans
The Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas, which has said it favors the destruction of Israel, won a landslide victory in Palestinian legislative elections, officials said today. President Bush said he would not deal with Hamas unless it renounced terrorism. "I have made it very clear, however, that a political party that articulates the destruction of Israel as part of its platform is a party with which we will not deal."
