| Emergency management in the United States is about to look very, very different — if the White House gets its way, that is. | Some 95 percent of the goods imported into the United States come by sea, so it's no secret that many security hawks take the security of the nation's 361 commercial seaports very seriously. Iraqi and U.S. officials called for calm, but a powerful Sunni Arab political bloc said it is boycotting national unity talks. | Both sides in the argument over whether a Dubai-based firm should be allowed to manage U.S. ports today used national security as a reason for why they are right. The deputy defense secretary said blocking the deal could ostracize one of the United States' few Arab allies. Meanwhile, opponents insist that the record of the United Arab Emirates is at best patchy, pointing to the cash funneled through its banking centers to help finance the 9/11 attacks. |
