| Today, the unexpected happened: Vermont Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy–the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee–announced that he will vote for Judge John G. Roberts as the chief justice of the United States. The decision is interesting for two reasons: First, he was considered a dependable "no" vote by some outside liberal groups. And second, he has now made it safe for moderate Democrats to also vote for Judge Roberts. |
