AP - More than a half-dozen wildfires driven by powerful Santa Ana winds spread across Southern California on Sunday, killing one person near San Diego and destroying several homes and a church in celebrity-laden Malibu.

A series of fast-spreading wildfires in southern California destroyed several homes and prompted some evacuations. A 1,000-acre fire is threatening Malibu and the weather is working against firefighters. Malibu Mayor Pro Tem Pamela Conley Ulich said: "This fire is 0 percent contained. We are at the mercy of the wind."
