| American students are doing better in math, and the gap between minority students and whites is narrowing, according to national test results released yesterday. Math scores for fourth and eighth graders have improved since the tests were last administered in 2003, while reading scores have remained about the same, according to results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, billed as the Nation's Report Card. |

Rory Carroll, a 33-year-old Irish citizen, is a seasoned foreign correspondent who was stationed in Rome and South Africa before accepting a yearlong posting in Iraq. |
