More than 1,000 new inmates were marched behind bars each week from June 2004 to June 2005, according to a report issued Sunday by the U.S. Department of Justice. Montana and South Dakota reported the biggest jump -- at least 7.8 percent increases in the number of prisoners. Both states say many of the offenders were methamphetamine addicts. "The data is clear -- drug use is driving up prison numbers throughout the region," South Dakota's corrections secretary Tim Reisch said in the news release.
