Sat, 20 Mar 2010 17:51:05 GMT Pope slams Irish church, no Vatican blame in abuse (AP)

FILE - The Dec. 30, 2009 file photo shows Pope Benedict XVI during his weekly general audience in the Paul VI hall at The Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI's former diocese in Munich said Friday, March 19, 2010 it is facing new allegations of physical and sexual abuse on a daily basis. Last week, the diocese confirmed the case of a priest who was transferred in 1980 to Munich. That came after three sets of parents alleged he had abused their children in the northwestern city of Essen, the diocese there said. The priest underwent therapy, but then returned to work with youngsters. He was convicted of abuse in 1986. Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was Archbishop of Munich and Freising at the time of the priest's transfer from Essen to Munich. The diocese has said Ratzinger knew about the transfer but not about the priest's continued work in Bavarian congregations after he assumed his duties at the Vatican. Erwin Wild, then spokesman of the diocese's council of priests, said he and his colleagues were not informed by Ratzinger that the priest was an offender, which he thinks was wrong. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)AP - Pope Benedict XVI rebuked Irish bishops Saturday for "grave errors of judgment" in handling clerical sex abuse cases and ordered an investigation into the Irish church. But he laid no blame for the problem on the Vatican's policies of keeping such cases secret.

Fri, 19 Mar 2010 10:13:26 -0400 Israel May Delay East Jerusalem Settlements
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spent 40 minutes on the phone with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Thursday night. The contents of the call have not been divulged but it is thought Netanyahu proposed a series of confidence building measures designed to defuse the diplomatic crisis with the U.S. The prime minister apparently did not promise to cancel the recently announced plan for 1600 new homes in the Jewish settlement of Ramat Shlomo. Instead it is widely reported, although not confirmed by the prime minister's office, he agreed to delay the start of construction and that other plans for settlements in East Jerusalem will not be made public in what many commentators are calling a "don't ask – don't tell" policy.

Two Russian veterans of the Soviet Afghan war privately warned General Stanley McChrystal last summer that the key to winning the war would be to pay off the Taliban. The official who wrote up a summary of two meetings between the Russians and U.S. military commanders also wrote that one of the "key take-aways" from the meetings was that extra troops were not the key to victory.
