Mon, 17 Apr 2006 16:00:00 EST Will the Democrats win the House?
Here is my Creators Syndicate column for this week. It's based on my analysis of the special election last week in the 50th Congressional District of California. Democrats had hoped their single viable candidate, Francine Busby, would get 50 percent of the vote and thus, under California's special election rules, capture the seat of the disgraced Duke Cunningham. Instead, Busby got 44 percent of the vote—the same percentage John Kerry won in the district. Other commentators have argued that this was a big gain for Democrats by comparing the percentage with the 30 percent of the district's voters who are registered Democrats.
Mon, 17 Apr 2006 16:00:00 EST The scattershot boycott
Several E-mails arrived from friends last week urging a boycott of Exxon Mobil. Very few people are going to stop driving, but the idea is to put pressure on one large company, Exxon Mobil, by buying only from competitors. It's worth a try. A low-level boycott of the company has gone for years without effect, but at the moment, people are furious about gas prices and the revolting $400 million package Exxon Mobil granted to former chairman and CEO Lee Raymond.

More than four years after President Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act, nearly 2 million children's test scores aren't being counted under the law's required racial categories an Associated Press review found.
