Wed, 15 Mar 2006 16:00:00 EST Saddam's mad scheming did him in
In the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq, there had been great concern about what kind of "scorched earth" tactics Saddam Hussein might deploy against the U.S. military. U.S. News, for example, outlined some of the "Six Deadly Fears"that America might face, such as chemical or biological weapons, a bloody last stand in Baghdad, torched oil fields, or civilian human shields.
Wed, 15 Mar 2006 16:00:00 EST NCAA tourney time: We're mad and we're glad
College football may have New Year's weekend and a slew of bowl games to call its own, but college basketball has the Big Dance, Dick Vitale, and every chance to make mayhem out of March. The NCAA men's Division I tournament began last night and runs over the next three weekends in venues from San Diego to Salt Lake City, from Dallas to Detroit. To get to the Final Four in Indianapolis, a team must win four straight games, then nail an additional two to claim the championship before more than 40,000 fans. Lose and you're out. Office pool hopefuls beware: In the recent past, the four No. 1 seeds haven't all made it to the Final Four. But no Cinderella 16th seed (that's the lowest for all ye who know little of the Madness) has so far knocked off a No. 1 seed; they're 0-84 since the 64-team format was adopted in 1985.

Thu, 16 Mar 2006 04:06:46 GMT U.S. Seeks Reversal of Moussaoui Ruling (AP)

An artist's rendering prosecutor David Novak, right, and defense attourney Edward MacMahon, center, plead their cases to the U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema during the fifth day of Zacarius Moussaoui's, left, sentencing trial at U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. during Monday, March 9, 2006. The angry federal judge unexpectedly recessed the death penalty trial of confessed al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui to consider whether government violations of her rules against coaching witnesses should remove the death penalty as an option. The stunning development came at the opening of the fifth day of the trial as the government had informed the judge and the defense over the weekend that a lawyer for the Federal Aviation Administration had coached four government FAA witnesses in violation of the rule set by Judge Brinkema that no witness should hear trial testimony in advance. (AP Photo/Dana Verkouteren)AP - Prosecutors asked a judge Wednesday to reconsider her decision to toss out half of the government's case against confessed terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui. They acknowledged that altering the judge's ruling is their only hope of salvaging the death-penalty case.

An Internet chat room, which contained "the worst imaginable forms of child pornography" has been shut down and more than two dozen people have been arrested, federal law officials announced today.
