Tue, 15 Jun 2010 05:08:47 GMT Documents: BP cut corners in days before blowout (AP)

Oil cleanup workers hired by BP clean oily deposits from the shore in Orange Beach, Ala., Saturday, June 12, 2010. Almost two months after an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, shortages of government-required protective gear and cleaning equipment are slowing work to remove the sticky mess and keep beaches along the coast safe and oil-free. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)AP - BP made a series of money-saving shortcuts and blunders that dramatically increased the danger of a destructive oil spill in a well that an engineer ominously described as a "nightmare" just six days before the blowout, according to documents released Monday that provide new insight into the causes of the disaster.

 Mon, 14 Jun 2010 16:15:52 -0400 U.S. Discovers Mineral Riches in Afghanistan
U.S. geologists have concluded that Afghanistan, a nation wracked by 30 years of violence that has left it one of the world's poorest countries, literally lies atop a goldmine of mineral riches potentially valued at $1 trillion. However, tapping a mineral wealth that could alleviate Afghanistan's woes is a long way away, given the current security situation and, more importantly, the country's lack of a physical infrastructure to even begin to develop its resources. With an annual Gross Domestic Product of $12 billion, American officials have long said that Afghanistan must develop long term sustainable economic sources of income that would provide a larger revenue stream so it can provide government services and security for itself after NATO forces leave.
