AP - The U.S. trade deficit soared to an all-time high of $725.8 billion in 2005, pushed upward by record imports of oil, food, cars and other consumer goods. The deficit with China hit an all-time high as did America's deficits with Japan, Europe, OPEC, Canada, Mexico and South and Central America.

| The government's decision to fold the Federal Emergency Management Agency into the Department of Homeland Security led to FEMA's failure during Hurricane Katrina, former FEMA Director Michael Brown testified today. "There was a cultural clash which didn't recognize the absolute inherent science of preparing for disaster, responding to it, mitigating against future disasters and recovering from disaster," he told a Senate panel looking into the government's response to the hurricane. |

| A British man charged with the murder of his American wife and baby near Boston has agreed to be extradited to the United States, his lawyers said today. Neil Entwistle could be back in Massachusetts within the week, Judith Seddon told reporters outside Bow Street Magistrates' Court in London. "He has consented (to be extradited) at the earliest opportunity because he wants to cooperate with the authorities in any way that he can," Seddon said. |
