A microphone lowered into a narrow hole drilled into a mine cavity where six workers are believed to be trapped has detected no sound so far, a rescue official said early Friday. Mine owner Bob Murray said no conclusions could be drawn yet from the lack of sound detected. The air quality in the cavity was found to be "very good," he said.
Temperatures reached record highs across much of the Southeast on Thursday. Highs in the upper 90s or above were expected to continue into Friday before the heat wave eases. Further north, rainy weather provided some relief from the heat.
