Homeless and jobless, he hooked up with an impromptu group of other locals, most from a halfway house, to run rescue missions along the swamped Mardi Gras parade route under the leadership of a local preacher. He worked long, hard hours and one time even fell into the polluted floodwaters, getting completely submerged.
