On the other, they become less effective the more they're used, as bacteria develop resistance to the drugs. In a study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a group of Harvard researchers examined doctors' prescriptions for children with sore throats and found that antibiotics are often given when they shouldn't be.

A 15-year-old is in custody tonight after allegedly shooting dead an assistant principal and wounding another assistant principal and the school principal, authorities in Jacksboro, Tennessee, say. Police have taken statements from the suspect and were piecing together a motive, said Campbell County Sheriff Ron McClellan. No students were injured in the shooting at Campbell County Comprehensive High School, which was locked down immediately after the shootings, the director of Campbell County schools added.
