Sat, 4 Mar 2006 18:00:00 EST Firefox: On the front lines of the Internet wars
Mitchell Baker has long been on the front lines of the Internet wars. As a lawyer at Netscape, she watched Microsoft steal market share (illegally, a federal court ruled) from the first software program that gave people easy access to the Internet. Since 1998, she's been at the forefront of the Mozilla project, which started out as a volunteer effort to build a better browser. (Mozilla was a nickname for the Mosaic Killer project started by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen to replace his first browser program.)
Sat, 4 Mar 2006 18:00:00 EST Mortimer B. Zuckerman: The conundrum of Russia
People are puzzled by Russia. It truly is like one of its famous matryoshka dolls--inside the big doll there are more little dolls, each smaller than the last. The big doll is that it is an authoritarian state run by the secret police, the siloviki, or higher police. They are the go-to people when you want anything done. That was so back in 1986 when I was in Moscow to assist in the release of our Moscow bureau chief, Nick Daniloff, and nothing has changed except the name--the KGB is now the FSB. These grim enforcers have been at the core of the Russian state for decades, an elite group with an unshakable belief in their mission to promote national greatness above all else. Their influence waned during the era of President Boris Yeltsin; today, it waxes under President Vladimir Putin.

Sun, 05 Mar 2006 09:31:02 GMT AP: Thousands of Federal Cases Kept Secret (AP)

Lucy Dalglish, Executive Director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, left, talks with Susan Burgess, center, and Kirsten Mitchell, right, at their office in Arlington, Va. Despite the Sixth Amendment's guarantee of public trials, nearly all records are being kept secret for more than 5,000 defendants who completed their journey through the federal courts over the last three years. Instances of such secrecy more than doubled from 2003 to 2005, an Associated Press investigation found, and court observers agree, that most of these defendants are cooperating government witnesses, but the secrecy surrounding their records prevents the public from knowing details of their plea bargains with the government. No matter how few turn out to be almost totally sealed after the defendant's case was completed, 'it's still significant,' said Dalglish.
