| Sat, 4 Mar 2006 18:00:00 EST Firefox: On the front lines of the Internet wars |
| Mitchell Baker has long been on the front lines of the Internet wars. As a lawyer at Netscape, she watched Microsoft steal market share (illegally, a federal court ruled) from the first software program that gave people easy access to the Internet. Since 1998, she's been at the forefront of the Mozilla project, which started out as a volunteer effort to build a better browser. (Mozilla was a nickname for the Mosaic Killer project started by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen to replace his first browser program.) |
| Sat, 4 Mar 2006 18:00:00 EST Mortimer B. Zuckerman: The conundrum of Russia |
| People are puzzled by Russia. It truly is like one of its famous
matryoshka dolls--inside the big doll there are more little dolls, each smaller than the last. The big doll is that it is an authoritarian state run by the secret police, the
siloviki, or higher police. They are the go-to people when you want anything done. That was so back in 1986 when I was in Moscow to assist in the release of our Moscow bureau chief, Nick Daniloff, and nothing has changed except the name--the KGB is now the FSB. These grim enforcers have been at the core of the Russian state for decades, an elite group with an unshakable belief in their mission to promote national greatness above all else. Their influence waned during the era of President Boris Yeltsin; today, it waxes under President Vladimir Putin. |

| While there are clear favorites going into the 78th Academy Awards tonight, nobody is ensured of going home with an Oscar until the envelopes are opened. And there are rumblings of upsets. |
| Sun, 05 Mar 2006 11:29:34 EST Bones are glimpse into how ancient settlers lived |
| It's been more than a decade since the bones of an ancient hunter were found along the banks of the Columbia River in Benton County, Washington. But the wait has been worth it. The skeleton not only reveals the personal condition of one man some 9,000 years ago, but it also offers a rare glimpse into how the first settlers may have lived and survived. One of the big unanswered questions was whether Kennewick Man was Caucasian. The answer, it turns out, is probably no. |
