In what could be a new low for drug smugglers, puppies have been found with bags of heroin stitched inside their bellies. A two-year investigation into a Colombian heroin ring netted more than 65 pounds of drugs, resulted in the arrests of more than 20 people and saved the lives of some drug-smuggling Labrador retrievers, the Drug Enforcement Agency said Wednesday. Puppy smugglers are another take on the human "mule," or "swallower" -- someone who ingests packets of drugs and transports them in their stomachs. The puppies, however, had little say in the matter.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin on Wednesday called for the state's mines to halt operations for safety reviews after two miners died in accidents earlier in the day. "I am calling on the industry to cease production activities immediately and go into a mine safety stand down," he said. Sixteen people have died in mine-related accidents in the state this year -- 12 at the Sago Mine, two in Melville and the two today.
