Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, has told the White House she is resigning. "It has been a great privilege, indeed, to have served as a member of the Court for 24 terms," she said in her resignation letter. The 75-year-old Reagan appointee is considered a moderate conservative and has often cast the pivotal swing vote in major cases.
