A gunman today killed an American diplomat and his Sudanese driver in Khartoum, U.S. and Sudanese officials said. The victim was identified as John Granville, from Buffalo, New York. A family statement said he "was part of a team trying to negotiate peace in the Sudan."
At least 50 bodies have been found in a burned-out church in western Kenya, The Associated Press quotes the Red Cross as saying. "There was a huge mob; they attacked the church," said a witness, according to AP. Tribal tensions have simmered in Kenya since the contested election of incumbent President Mwai Kibaki.
Pakistan's Interior Ministry backtracked today on its statement that Benazir Bhutto died because she hit her head on a sunroof latch during a shooting and bomb attack. The government also offered a reward to anyone who could identify two suspects from the killing.
