AP - Pope John Paul II was responding to treatment with antibiotics Friday and described as stable after he suddenly developed a high fever brought on by a urinary tract infection, Italian news agencies reported. The pontiff's health had declined sharply and rapidly a day after he began receiving nutrition through a feeding tube.

Pope John Paul II was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church late Thursday night, a Vatican source told CNN. His condition remains "serious," but Vatican officials said the pontiff appears to be responding well to antibiotic treatment for a urinary tract infection that caused him to develop a fever.
